In 897, a dead pope was dug up, dressed in royal robes, and put on trial. Pope Stephen ordered his predecessor’s rotting corpse dragged into a crowded courtroom. A trembling deacon stood beside the body, whispering answers on its behalf. Found guilty of perjury, the corpse was stripped and mutilated. They chopped off his blessing fingers and threw him in the river. But Rome’s fury quickly turned on the living Pope. Within months, Stephen was imprisoned and strangled in his dark cell.
