The boy had a test. The girl had rehearsal. Grandma was napping. Auntie was on a phone call. The cat curled up on his empty chair. The dog waited by the door. He came home that evening quietly, smelling of engine oil and hard work. He sat down alone. No cake. No candles. No song. Then the little girl stopped. She saw the date on her sheet music.
