You were taught that the Greek gods were protectors, but the ancient Greeks built temples just to survive their cruelty. To the ancients, the sky wasn't a source of wonder. It was a loaded weapon. Worship wasn't about love or devotion. It was a high-stakes protection racket. If you didn't bribe Zeus with the fat of slaughtered bulls, he burned your crops. If you didn't drown live horses in the sea, Poseidon dragged your ships into the abyss. Even speaking the name of Hades was considered a death sentence. They whispered euphemisms, calling him 'The Wealthy One' so he wouldn't look their way. The myths we tell today are sanitized fairy tales. The original stories are drenched in blood, jealousy, and arbitrary wrath. Humanity was nothing but playthings to these giants. Crickets to be stepped on, or clay to be molded and broken. So when they built those massive stone pillars reaching toward the heavens... It wasn't to get closer to their creators. They just wanted a roof strong enough to hide from them.
