A man was driving home late one dark night when he noticed a young woman walking alone on the shoulder of a deserted highway. She looked cold, tired, and completely out of place in the darkness. Feeling sorry for her, he pulled over and offered her a ride. The woman introduced herself as Claire, and during the drive they formed an immediate connection. What began as a simple act of kindness turned into hours of effortless conversation as they just drove the entire night. By the time he dropped her off at her place, the man felt as though he had known her for years. Before the man pulled away, they made plans to see each other again. A few days pass and they arrange to meet for dinner. The evening was perfect. They shared stories, laughed together, and wandered through quiet streets beneath the glow of streetlights. When the night air grew cold, the man took off his jacket and placed it around Claire's shoulders. She seemed touched by the gesture, and as the evening came to an end, both left believing it was the beginning of something special. The following day, the man tried calling her to arrange yet another date. Only to be met by another voice. Her mother. Instead, he discovered something impossible. Claire had died eight years earlier. According her family, she had been killed in a car accident on the very stretch of highway where the man had first found her walking alone in the dark. Certain there had to be some explanation, the man visited the cemetery when he learns of Claire's grave-site where she was buried. The sky was gray as he walked among the gravestones until he found her name carved into a weathered monument. Staring back at him from an attached photograph was the same woman he had shared dinner with only days before. Then he noticed something resting on top of the tombstone. His jacket. A cold feeling settled over him as he picked it up. The man looked around the empty cemetery. No one was there. The wind moved softly through the trees, carrying with it the faint scent of rain. And for the first time since meeting Claire, he realized that he had never once seen her reflection.
