FAO’s latest Cereal Supply and Demand Brief — June 2026. Global cereal stocks at roughly 952 million tonnes. Stocks-to-use ratio around 31.7 percent. Rice stocks were covering about 4.6 months of utilization. Sounds like a safety net. Add 9 billion people in panic, hoarding by anyone with power or guns, and that buffer burns in weeks, not months. Eighty percent of the world’s agricultural land is locked in livestock — grazing or growing their feed. One point five billion cattle. Over thirty billion chickens. Overnight the market vanishes. The processing plants go dark. The cold chains die. What happens to those animals? Veterinary reality is brutal. Unmilked dairy cows develop clinical mastitis in three to seven days. Billions suffer. Billions die. The carcasses breed rats and disease on an industrial scale.
