Full transcript of **Did you know?** Mao Zedong was the leader of China
Mao Zedong was the leader of China from 1949 until his death in 1976. During his rule, he launched major campaigns such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. The Great Leap Forward, which began in 1958, aimed to rapidly industrialize and transform China’s economy. However, the policies contributed to a devastating famine that historians estimate caused tens of millions of deaths. Later, the Cultural Revolution, which started in 1966, led to widespread political persecution, social upheaval, and violence. Millions of people were imprisoned, displaced, or persecuted. Because of these events, Mao Zedong remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in modern history.
