When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ began calling the people of Makkah to the Oneness of Allah, he challenged more than idols — he challenged the pride and social hierarchy of the Quraysh elite. Makkah, over fourteen hundred years ago. A man stood and spoke a truth that shook an entire city. He called them to abandon their idols. To worship One God alone. For the elite of Quraysh, this was not just a religious challenge. It was a personal attack on everything they valued. Among the fiercest opponents was his own uncle — Abu Lahab. A man of status, wealth, and burning hatred. Beside him stood his wife — Umm Jamil bint Harb. Sister of Abu Sufyan. A woman of immense social power. She was known for her eloquence, her influence, and her venomous tongue. When the Prophet ﷺ began to preach, Umm Jamil did not ignore him. She declared war on him. She would scatter thorns and sharp stones on the path he walked — trying to wound him with every step. She composed hateful poetry against him. She rallied the leaders of Quraysh. She mocked and humiliated his followers. This was not random hatred. It was calculated. It was obsessive. Her pride could not bear that a man from her own clan would dismantle the world she ruled. Then came the revelation. Allah revealed Surah Al-Masad — directly addressing Abu Lahab and his wife. Perished are the hands of Abu Lahab, and perished is he. His wealth and what he earned will not avail him. And his wife — the carrier of firewood. Around her neck, a rope of palm fiber. This woman who spread thorns to wound the Prophet would herself be bound — in this life and the next — by the weight of her own hatred. She heard this Surah was revealed about her. She came to the Prophet ﷺ with a stone, burning with rage. But she could not see him. Allah veiled his presence from her eyes. She found only his companion Abu Bakr. She declared she had heard Muhammad only spoke poetry. Then she left. Never seeing what was right in front of her. That is the tragedy of arrogance. It does not just reject truth. It makes truth invisible. Umm Jamil had every advantage — wealth, lineage, eloquence, power. And she used every one of them against the light. Her story is sealed in the Quran forever. Not as a hero. As a warning. Ask yourself — what is it that you refuse to see? What truth has your pride made invisible to you?
