The longest wars stretch across decades. But the shortest war in history? It was over before you finished your coffee. 1896. The island of Zanzibar. Sultan Khalid seizes the throne without British permission. The British Empire issues a strict ultimatum. Step down by nine AM, or face the Royal Navy. Khalid refuses, barricading himself inside the royal palace with three thousand guards. He assumes the British are bluffing. They aren't. At nine-o-two AM, British cruisers unleash absolute hell. High-explosive shells tear through the wooden palace. The Sultan's defense fleet is sunk in minutes. By nine-forty AM, the palace is a burning ruin. The Sultan's flag is shot down, and the war is over. It lasted exactly thirty-eight minutes. Five hundred defenders perished, with only one British sailor injured. The ultimate insult? The British sent the new Sultan a bill for the artillery shells used to destroy the palace.
