He spoke fluent French, Japanese, and carried legal European currency. Frustrated, he insisted his country had thrived for a thousand years. Guarded by police, they locked him in a high-security hotel room. The room had no balcony, and the window was completely sealed. Two armed officers stood watch outside his door all night. Inside, the mysterious traveler unpacked his leather briefcase in silence. He stared out at the rainy Tokyo skyline, utterly confused. By morning, the heavy wooden door was unlocked by the guards. The room was completely empty; the man had vanished. His personal documents, held in the airport vault, disappeared too.
