Can ChatGPT Edit Videos? What Works in 2026 and What Doesn't
ChatGPT can look at a video you upload and help you plan an edit, but it is not a video editor. Here is exactly where the line sits in 2026, which connected apps can cut video from inside a chat, and the editing workflows that actually save time.

Can ChatGPT edit videos? Not in the way a video editor does. ChatGPT itself has no timeline and does not export an edited video file as a normal feature. It can accept a video you upload, describe parts of it, and help you plan the edit, write captions and produce a cut list. Real cutting inside a chat only happens through connected apps, such as Adobe's apps for ChatGPT, or by connecting ChatGPT to a video tool that does the rendering.
This page is about editing. If your question is whether ChatGPT can create a video from nothing, read our companion guide, can ChatGPT generate videos.
The short answer
| Editing task | ChatGPT on its own | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Trim, cut and reorder clips | No timeline; it can tell you where to cut | A video editor, or an editing app connected to ChatGPT |
| Understand what is in a video | Partly; OpenAI says its analysis of uploaded video may be incomplete | A transcript plus ChatGPT |
| Write captions and subtitles | Yes, from a transcript | Transcribe first, then ask ChatGPT to clean and time it |
| Pick the best moments for clips | Yes, from a timestamped transcript | An AI clipper for the actual cuts |
| Titles, descriptions, chapters | Yes, and well | ChatGPT, or a dedicated generator |
| Make a finished video from a script | No | A video generator connected to ChatGPT |
What happens when you upload a video
ChatGPT does accept video files as attachments on many accounts, including some free ones, though availability depends on the platform and upload method. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT may use tools to analyse an uploaded video, and warns that it may not analyse the whole video or accurately interpret its audio. In practice that means it can often describe what appears on screen in parts of the clip, but you should not rely on it to have heard every line or seen every second.
Uploads also have limits. OpenAI's file upload FAQ lists a hard limit of 512 MB per file, and uploads count toward your plan's usage. A long 4K recording will often be too large, so compress it or upload a shorter section.
ChatGPT also has a Python environment for data analysis. It runs in a sandbox without internet access, and OpenAI does not document video editing as one of its uses. Treat any trimming or conversion you manage to get out of it as an experiment, not a workflow you can depend on for real projects.
What ChatGPT cannot do
- It has no timeline, so there is nothing to drag, trim or layer.
- It does not reliably watch a full video or hear all of its audio.
- It does not export an edited MP4 as a standard feature.
- It cannot colour grade, stabilise or mix audio on your footage.
- It does not generate new video clips. OpenAI announced in March 2026 that it was shutting down Sora, and its notice to developers says the Sora 2 models were removed from the API on September 24, 2026.
The common pattern behind disappointing results is asking ChatGPT to "edit my video" and expecting a file back. It will usually answer with advice or a plan, because a plan is what it can actually produce.
Editing through apps inside ChatGPT
The bigger change is apps. ChatGPT now lets other companies plug their tools into the chat, and some of those tools edit video. Adobe, for example, offers its apps inside ChatGPT. Adobe's page for the integration describes uploading a video and asking for a quick cut, turning key moments into a highlight reel, or resizing it for YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, then downloading the result. Adobe also notes that some capabilities may require an eligible Adobe plan and that the integration does not include every feature of each Adobe app.
So the honest answer for 2026 is: ChatGPT cannot edit your video, but an app running inside ChatGPT sometimes can. The quality of the edit is the app's, not ChatGPT's, and the limits are the app's limits.
Video creation works the same way. FacelessGenie has a ChatGPT connector: once it is connected, you can ask ChatGPT for a video in plain language, and FacelessGenie writes the script, generates the scenes, records the voice, adds captions and renders the file, using the same credits as the app. Custom connectors need a paid ChatGPT plan with Developer Mode turned on.
Editing jobs ChatGPT is good at
Most of editing is decisions, not button presses. That is where ChatGPT earns its place.
- Cut lists: given a timestamped transcript, it can suggest which sections to keep, drop or move, and why.
- Tightening: it can rewrite a rambling spoken section into a shorter script you can re-record or use as narration.
- Clip selection: it can find the five strongest 30 to 60 second moments in a long transcript and suggest a hook line for each.
- Captions: it can clean up a raw transcript, fix names and punctuation, and split it into readable caption lines.
- B-roll lists: it can suggest what to show over each section of narration.
- Packaging: titles, descriptions, chapters and thumbnail text. See also our free YouTube chapter generator and YouTube title generator.
- Editor help: it can explain how to do a specific task in the editor you use, or write an FFmpeg command you run on your own computer.
Four workflows that work
1. Transcript first, then edit by hand
- 1Transcribe the recording with timestamps.
- 2Paste it into ChatGPT and ask for a cut list for a video of a target length.
- 3Make the cuts in your editor using the timestamps.
- 4Ask ChatGPT for captions, a title and a description from the final transcript.
2. Find clips, then let a clipper cut them
Ask ChatGPT to pick the best short moments from a long transcript, then cut them with an AI clipper. FacelessGenie's YouTube clip maker gives you one free captioned clip a day, and our guide on how to clip a YouTube video covers the manual way.
3. Use an editing app inside ChatGPT
For quick cuts and resizes, an app such as Adobe's inside ChatGPT can do the job without leaving the chat. Check the output carefully, and expect to finish anything complex in a real editor.
4. Skip the footage and generate the video
If you are editing because you have to assemble narration, visuals and captions from scratch, it is often faster not to edit at all. Write the script with ChatGPT, then paste it into a faceless video format that builds the scenes, voice, captions and music for you. You can still change one scene, the voice or the music afterwards.
Prompts to copy
“Here is a timestamped transcript of a 14-minute interview. Suggest a 6-minute edit. List each section to keep with start and end times, one line on why, and any sections I should move. Keep the strongest story for the end.”
“From this transcript, find five moments that would work as 45-second vertical clips. For each, give the start and end time and a hook line I can put on screen in the first two seconds.”
“Turn this transcript into caption lines of at most 32 characters, keeping the original timing. Fix obvious transcription errors and keep names as written: [names].”
“I edit in DaVinci Resolve. Explain step by step how to remove silences longer than half a second from a voiceover track.”
When to skip editing altogether
If you film yourself, interviews or events, you need an editor, and ChatGPT is a useful assistant beside it. If you make faceless content (explainers, stories, list videos, kids content), much of the editing work is assembling things that do not exist yet. A generator removes that step: FacelessGenie times scene changes and word-by-word captions to the narration automatically, at lengths from short vertical clips to 20-minute widescreen videos.

Not as a standard feature. ChatGPT can accept a video upload and describe parts of it, but OpenAI says its analysis may be incomplete and it does not export an edited video. Editing inside a chat comes from connected apps, such as Adobe's apps for ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT Generate Videos? What It Can and Can't Do
ChatGPT is a genuinely good scriptwriter, but it doesn't generate or edit video by itself. OpenAI has shut down Sora, its video model, so connecting ChatGPT to a dedicated video tool is what actually gets you a finished, captioned video.

How to Clip a YouTube Video (3 Ways, Free) in 2026
You can clip a YouTube video in under a minute with the built-in Clip button, but it only makes a link. If you want an actual vertical file with captions for Shorts or TikTok, you need one of the other two methods. Here are all three, with when to use each.
