Reddit Funny Stories: Turn Them Into Short Videos That Land

Funny Reddit stories are some of the easiest posts to find and the hardest to narrate well. The joke has to survive being read aloud. Here is where to look, how to rewrite for timing, and how to make the video without copying anyone's post.

Funny Reddit stories are short first-person posts about things going wrong in a way that is fun to retell: a mistake at work, a rule followed so literally it backfired, a customer who demanded the impossible. On YouTube Shorts and TikTok they usually run as a narrated story over gameplay or a satisfying loop, with captions on screen.

This page is the comedy spoke of our Reddit stories guide. The general guide covers sourcing and ethics. This one is about the part comedy makes harder: keeping a joke funny once a voice reads it out loud.

The quick answer

  • The most reliable sources are r/tifu, r/MaliciousCompliance, r/pettyrevenge, r/TalesFromRetail, r/talesfromtechsupport and r/ChoosingBeggars.
  • A funny post is not automatically a funny video. Cut the setup hard, move the best line to the end, and leave a beat before it.
  • Credit the subreddit, never show usernames, and paraphrase rather than read word for word. Writing your own story in the same style is the safest route of all.
  • Most comedy story videos land between 30 and 75 seconds. Shorter than most Reddit drama, because a joke loses energy fast.

What survives being read aloud

Text comedy and spoken comedy work differently. On Reddit, the reader controls the pace and can reread the good line. In a video, the voice controls the pace and the viewer gets one pass. The stories that keep working as videos tend to share three traits.

  1. 1A setup you can say in one sentence. "My manager told me to log every minute of my day" is a full setup. If the context takes a paragraph, the joke is already late.
  2. 2Escalation. Each beat should make the situation a little worse or a little more absurd. A flat story with one funny line at the end rarely holds a viewer that long.
  3. 3A payoff line that works without the text. Visual jokes, typos and formatting gags disappear when read by a voice.

Rewriting for the punchline

Most funny posts need more editing than drama posts, not less. Reddit writers often reveal the funny outcome in the title or the first line. That works for readers scrolling a feed, but it kills the payoff in a video.

The last line deserves the most attention. Make it short, put the funny word at the very end, and leave a half-second pause before it. "So now the entire office logs bathroom breaks. In a shared spreadsheet. Named after me." lands better than the same facts in one long sentence.

If you are stuck on an opening line, the free hook generator can give you several first lines for the same story. Pick the one that sets up the joke without giving it away.

Credit, permission and original stories

A funny post still belongs to the person who wrote it. Narration channels usually handle this by crediting the subreddit on screen, keeping usernames out, rewriting the story in their own words, and checking subreddit rules about reuse. Some communities and some writers ask to be contacted first; if they do, ask.

The more durable option is writing original stories in the same shape. Comedy story formats (malicious compliance, choosing beggars, the customer who is always wrong) are not owned by anyone. Inventing your own situations also means nobody has heard the ending before, which helps on platforms that reward completion. Many creators keep a notes file of small real-life moments and turn them into scripts later.

Platform rules point the same way. YouTube's monetization policies on reused and inauthentic content are aimed at channels that add nothing to material they did not make. A rewritten script, your own voice choices, your own edit and captions are what make a story video yours.

Voice, footage and captions

Comedy wants a voice that sounds amused but not like it is laughing at its own joke. Slightly faster than a horror read, roughly 155 to 170 words a minute, with a clear pause before the payoff. Deadpan delivery often works best: the more ordinary the voice sounds, the funnier the absurd detail.

  • Footage: bright gameplay such as parkour runs or endless runners matches comedy's energy. Find fresh clips with gameplay background videos.
  • Captions: keep word-by-word captions on and make sure the punchline word appears exactly when it is spoken, not a beat early.
  • Music: light or none. A comedy beat under the punchline can work, but loud music fights the narrator.
  • Two voices: for stories built on an exchange ("she asked for it free, I said..."), a second voice for quoted lines makes the back-and-forth easier to follow.

Our AI voiceover guide explains how commas, full stops and line breaks change an AI narrator's timing, which is most of what comedy delivery comes down to.

Building a comedy series

Funny stories work well as recurring series because viewers come back for a category, not a single post. Pick one lane and name it consistently: "Malicious compliance, part 14" tells a returning viewer exactly what they are getting.

  • Keep the same narrator voice and caption style across the series.
  • Post compilations of four to six short stories on one theme as longer YouTube videos, and cut the best single story from each into a Short.
  • Use comments for ideas. Viewers of comedy channels often share their own stories, which, with permission, can become new episodes.
  • Check what length is working using our YouTube Shorts length guide rather than guessing.

Make one step by step

  1. 1Write an original funny story, or rewrite a post in your own words with the subreddit credited.
  2. 2Cut the setup to one line, order the beats from weakest to strongest, and end on the shortest possible punchline.
  3. 3Paste it into the Reddit story video generator, or open the Reddit post to video format if you want to choose length, voice and visuals yourself.
  4. 4Pick a deadpan or lightly amused narrator and bright background footage.
  5. 5Render, then check that the punchline caption lands on the spoken word.
  6. 6Post, and keep the next story in the series ready.
